What makes this author so unique is his amazing eye for detail. Animalia is not just an alphabet book, but it's entertainment and learning for children of all ages. It stretches the normal adult vocabulary for synonims, but there are enough common childhood items for the youngsters to appreciate. I've given this book to friends that will be soon-to-be parents, and they all are in awe once they open the book.

The second, which is the approach taken in this book, is to have as many items as possible crammed onto each page.The result is an alphabet book that grows with your kid, because even a grown-up can spend a lot of time quietly poring over the pages of the book to catch one last detail, find one more F word, locate the boy in the striped shirt on every page.There are a few pages that seemingly indicate violence - hogs going into battle, a kangaroo in a kidnapping, warrior wasps - so parents of more sensitive children will want to read this book before purchasing. Frankly, I think these scenes are not worrisome at all, but others may disagree.
This book will become your child's favorite book and your favorite gift to give a child. All ages will love it. The illustrations are beautiful, the letters help with learning the alphabet, the "hunt" becomes a wonderful game, and as the child grows, s/he will find more hidden words. Animalia is amazing.

My kids loved this book when they were little, 15 years ago. Since we knew that everything on the page had to start with the corresponding letter, we'd spend hours trying to figure out the names of things - "What is the name of the monkey on the "G" page." "What is it about that house that makes it a "C" word." The pictures are a delight. And the puzzle of finding the little boy on each page is tons of fun.It makes a great gift for new readers and older kids too.
